In the church of Santa Maria degli Angeli and the Martyrs, there is the famous Michelangelo's cloister, commissioned in 1561 by Pope Pius IV. Also called the Great Cloister, Michelangelo's work was actually four handed with the help of Jacopo del Duca. It is one of the largest cloisters in Italy, with 10,000 square meters of space and 100 monolithic columns per arm. The façade of the church is incorporated within the walls of the other surrounding buildings and has a concave shape, recalling the curved walls of the caldarium, a hot water pool of the Diocletian’s Baths.
